Art Deco is an artistic movement originating in the 1920's, continuing through the outbreak of WWII in 1939.  Feeding on the optimism of the times and a progressive view that people have the power to improve society and the world through rational thought, hard work, and the appropriate use of technology.  Inspired by exotic designs from around the world and the dauntless forms of modern technology, Deco was internationalist in outlook and futurist in perspective.  Deco displays a buoyant confidence, and emphasizes the grandeur of human achievements.  Art Deco materials include lustrous surfaces such as aluminum, stainless steel, and lacquered wood, and designs often include brilliant sunburst patterns, such as those found in New York City's Chrysler Building, or bold stepped forms such as in New York's Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center.  EarthDeco's own logo is inspired by a classic Deco Saturn-ring globe design.  Other common themes include daring geometric designs such as those displayed in promotional posters for Fritz Lang's masterpiece film, Metropolis, and also in our elegant Deco Candlesticks.

Retro Style

The use of the term "Retro" in design was used in the Paris Mode Retro movement in the early 1970's, which took a nostalgic look back at French styles of the 1940's.  Originally used as a term of conservatism, today Retro is most often associated with a half-ironic take on designs of the recent past (generally 1950's-80's), presenting them as contemporary or even futuristic chic.  Styles tend to be brightly colored, include bold forms, and are often heavily influenced by psychadelic design, pop art, and pop culture.  Consider the popularity of lava lamps and tie-dyed t-shirts.  Groovy.
